Older mosquito nets could be made from cotton, linen, silk, hemp, or other fine textiles, depending on local materials and trade. The cloth had to be open enough for air to pass through but tight enough to block insects. That balance made quality important: a heavy cloth trapped heat, while a loose mesh let insects through.
Construction involved more than the netting itself. Nets needed edges, seams, hanging loops, cords, poles, frames, or hooks. A bed net might hang from the ceiling, a rectangular frame, or a single central point. Nets for mats or hammocks had to be tucked under the sleeping surface so insects could not enter from below.
Repair was constant. Small tears, loose hems, and gaps at the floor could make the object fail. Mending a net therefore belonged to ordinary textile care, alongside sewing bedding, patching clothes, and maintaining curtains, mats, and other household fabrics.
Sleep, health, and household routine
A mosquito net changed the feel of a sleeping place. It made a small protected zone inside a room, veranda, boat, or temporary shelter. The person inside could still feel heat and hear household noise, but the net created a visible boundary that discouraged insects and sometimes gave a little privacy.
For families, setting up nets could be part of the evening routine. Nets were lowered, shaken out, tucked in, checked for holes, and arranged around children before lamps were extinguished. In the morning they might be tied up, aired, or folded away so the space could return to daytime use.
The health importance of mosquito nets became clearer as people learned more about mosquito-borne illnesses. Even without that knowledge, households understood the practical value of fewer bites: better sleep, less scratching, fewer infected sores, and more comfort during hot seasons.

Access to mosquito nets was uneven. In some regions a net was an ordinary household necessity, while in others it was a comfort item associated with travelers, officials, merchants, hospitals, or wealthier homes. Cost depended on the price of fine cloth, the availability of imported textiles, and the ability to replace worn netting.
Climate and housing mattered as much as income. A well-built house with screened openings offered one kind of protection, while a small room with open eaves, gaps, or shared sleeping space made a personal net more important. People sleeping outdoors, on boats, in field huts, or in crowded seasonal housing could depend on portable netting because fixed architecture offered little protection.
Where several people shared one sleeping area, nets had to match household realities. A large family net might cover a bed platform or group of mats, while a smaller net protected a baby, a sick person, or the family member most vulnerable to bites.
Changes over time
Mosquito nets changed as textiles became cheaper, finer, and more standardized. Industrial thread, machine-made mesh, metal bed frames, hooks, and later synthetic fibers made nets easier to buy, hang, wash, and transport. Lightweight materials also made it more practical to use nets in hot rooms without cutting off too much air.
In the twentieth century, public health campaigns gave mosquito nets a new role beyond private comfort. Treated nets could repel or kill insects that landed on them, making the household object part of wider disease prevention. Even then, daily use still depended on ordinary habits: whether the net was hung correctly, repaired, kept clean, and used through the night.
