History of the Falconer in Everyday Life
A falconer was a worker who kept, trained, flew, and cared for falcons, hawks, and other birds of prey. The name could describe an independent hunter, a household specialist, an estate servant, a supplier of trained birds, or a person responsible for an entire mews. Although falconry is often remembered through wealthy people carrying handsome birds, its daily practice depended on skilled attendants who prepared food, cleaned perches, repaired equipment, watched health, and trained each bird to return.
The occupation joined animal care to hunting. A falconer could not control a bird of prey by force alone. The bird had to be kept fit, accustomed to human company, responsive to signals, and ready to pursue suitable quarry without being weakened or overfed. Success rested on repeated small judgments about appetite, weight, weather, feathers, temperament, and trust.
Everyday work of the falconer
The day began with inspection. The falconer checked whether each bird stood alert, gripped its perch normally, cast up its pellet of indigestible material, and left droppings of an expected appearance. Eyes, nostrils, feet, talons, beak, and feathers could all reveal trouble. A bird that sat fluffed up, refused food, shifted uneasily, or favored one foot needed attention before training or hunting began.
Routine work included cleaning perches and floors, refreshing bath water, preparing meat, checking leather straps, weighing birds, taking them into daylight, and deciding how much exercise they required. The falconer also kept dogs, horses, cages, carrying frames, and stores in order when these belonged to the establishment. Hunting occupied only part of a working life filled with feeding, waiting, mending, carrying, and observation.
Care continued regardless of a household's plans. A dinner could be postponed, but a hungry bird could not simply be put away and forgotten. During the molting season, when old feathers were replaced, the falconer concentrated on quiet housing and good food. During the flying season, the routine became more active and exact, with daily exercise and close attention to condition.
The mews and its maintenance
Birds were kept in a mews or in smaller chambers, sheds, tents, sheltered yards, and portable enclosures according to place and period. A useful mews needed fresh air without harsh drafts, light without excessive heat, protection from damp, and enough quiet to prevent panic. Perches had to suit the bird's feet, while doors, shutters, screens, and tethering points had to prevent escape or injury.
Cleanliness was constant work. Remains of meat attracted flies, rats, and dogs. Droppings and cast pellets accumulated beneath perches. Damp bedding, dirty water, or rough perch surfaces could damage feet and encourage illness. The falconer scraped surfaces, removed scraps, changed sand or other floor material, washed vessels, and kept food stores away from vermin.
The mews also served as a workshop and storeroom. Hoods hung ready for use, leather jesses and leashes needed oiling or replacement, bells waited to be fitted, and spare swivels, rings, thread, needles, knives, and lures had to remain easy to find. Disorder could cost a bird: a frayed strap, poorly fastened door, or missing glove might become serious at the moment of handling.
Food, weight, and health
A bird of prey ate meat, but feeding well required more judgment than placing scraps on a perch. Falconers used appropriate fresh quarry or carefully prepared portions of small animals and birds. They considered bones, feathers, fur, organs, fat, and cleanliness as well as the amount of flesh. Spoiled meat could cause illness, while an unbalanced diet could weaken feathers, muscles, and feet.
Appetite helped shape training. A bird that had eaten heavily might ignore the falconer and remain away after a flight; one kept too hungry could lose strength and health. Historical falconers judged condition by touch, behavior, and experience. Modern keepers commonly use accurate scales as another guide. In either case, the aim was a strong, responsive bird, not starvation.
Falconers treated damaged feathers, overgrown beaks or talons, foot sores, parasites, digestive trouble, and injuries from quarry or obstacles. Remedies differed greatly across cultures and centuries, and some old treatments were ineffective or harmful. Practical knowledge still mattered. The keeper who noticed a change early had a better chance of saving a bird than one who waited until it could no longer stand or fly.
Training and the return to the glove
Training began by making the bird calm in the presence of people. A newly caught or unfamiliar bird had to learn to stand on the glove, accept food, tolerate movement, and respond to the falconer's voice and actions. This process required long periods of quiet handling. Sudden punishment could produce fear without teaching the return on which all later flying depended.
The falconer first offered food at close range, then called the bird across increasing distances. A light training line could prevent loss during early outdoor lessons. The lure, often made to resemble quarry and baited with food, taught a falcon to turn, pursue, and return to a familiar signal. Hawks that worked differently might be called directly to the glove or follow the falconer through suitable ground.
Every flight involved a bargain. The bird was free to pursue, perch, feed, or leave; the falconer made returning worthwhile through habit, food, and familiarity. Training therefore had to be renewed. A bird that responded yesterday might be distracted today by wind, wild prey, fear, or a full crop. Reliable work came from repetition rather than a single moment of taming.
Gloves, hoods, jesses, and bells
The thick leather glove protected the falconer's hand and provided a steady perch. Jesses, narrow straps attached at the bird's legs, allowed careful restraint. A leash and swivel helped secure the bird without twisting the straps. These pieces had to be strong, smooth, well fitted, and checked frequently because damaged leather could injure a leg or allow escape.
A hood covered the bird's eyes and reduced its response to confusing movement during carrying or waiting. Making and fitting one demanded care: too loose and it slipped, too tight and it rubbed or interfered with breathing. Not every falconry tradition used identical equipment, and different birds were handled in different ways, but quiet control was the common purpose.
Small bells helped the falconer locate a bird in flight, vegetation, or failing light. The lure brought it back to a known object and reward. Pouches carried meat, cord, and small tools. Knives prepared food, while blocks, bow perches, baths, carrying frames, and sometimes tracking animals supported the day's work. Much falconry equipment came from the labor of leatherworkers, metalworkers, and other craftspeople.
Hunting days and field labor
Before leaving, the falconer assessed wind, rain, heat, visibility, ground, and likely quarry. The choice of bird mattered because falcons, hawks, eagles, and other raptors pursue prey in different ways. Open country suited some flights, while woodland edges, fields, wetlands, steppe, desert, or rough ground called for other methods. Local knowledge could matter as much as the pedigree of the bird.
In the field, the falconer carried the bird, managed the hood and leash, watched the sky, and coordinated with people or dogs that found and flushed quarry. The worker needed to see where the bird flew and where it landed, then cross ditches, crops, scrub, or soft ground without losing sight of it. Long intervals of waiting could be followed by a few fast, difficult minutes.
After a successful flight, the falconer approached without provoking the bird to carry its catch away. Food could be exchanged so that quarry was recovered while the bird received a reward. After an unsuccessful flight, the greater concern was bringing the bird back safely. A lost hawk meant not only financial loss but the disappearance of an animal built into the keeper's daily life.
Capture, breeding, and supply
For much of history, many trained raptors were taken from the wild as nestlings, young birds, or adults. Catching and transporting them created its own network of trappers, carriers, dealers, and intermediaries. Birds might travel far from the landscapes where they were captured, and survival depended on careful housing and feeding along the route.
Access to nests and wild birds was often controlled by custom, property rights, licenses, or law. The risks of taking young birds also varied by species and terrain. A collector might climb cliffs or trees, watch migration routes, and keep newly captured birds calm during transport. Falconers then had to turn an animal unfamiliar with human hands into a healthy working partner.
Captive breeding became much more important in the modern period and now supplies many falconry birds. It shifted some labor toward breeding chambers, record keeping, controlled pairing, incubation, veterinary care, and the management of young birds. Conservation rules and wildlife protections also changed where birds could come from and how falconers documented their possession.
Households, status, and service
Falconry was practiced by people of different ranks and in many regions, but keeping several birds required food, space, equipment, land, and labor. Large households and estates could employ a master falconer with assistants beneath him. The master organized birds, staff, training, and field days; junior workers cleaned, carried food, tended equipment, and learned by watching.
The bird on a wealthy person's glove displayed leisure and status, yet the falconer's hands had done much of the preparation. The keeper rose early, handled raw meat, cleared droppings, repaired straps, and waited through molt and bad weather. Like a groom caring for fine horses, the falconer could possess rare expertise while remaining a servant within the household hierarchy.
Falconry also flourished outside European estates. Communities across Asia, North Africa, the Middle East, and elsewhere developed distinct practices suited to local raptors, quarry, landscapes, and ways of travel. Some falconers worked from horseback, some crossed desert or steppe, and others flew birds near farms, marshes, or woodland. There was never one universal falconer's day.
Apprenticeship and practical knowledge
Falconers learned through close instruction because much of the craft was hard to gain from words alone. A beginner had to feel how a bird stood on the glove, recognize when a leash was safely tied, judge the difference between calm and weakness, and know when to release or wait. A mistake could injure the learner, the bird, a dog, or the quarry.
Knowledge passed through households, families, specialist officers, clubs, and informal mentoring. Written falconry books preserved names, remedies, training advice, and ideals, but daily skill remained physical and local. The apprentice carried equipment, cleaned the mews, prepared food, and watched experienced hands before being trusted with a valuable bird in open country.
Vocabulary itself marked expertise. Terms distinguished types of birds, ages, feathers, stages of training, equipment, flight, and behavior. The words varied between languages and traditions. Knowing them helped workers communicate quickly, but the deeper test was whether the bird remained healthy and returned after release.
Risks, losses, and working conditions
The falconer's work brought cuts, scratches, bites, and punctures from beaks and talons. Raw meat, droppings, dust, and parasites created further hazards. Carrying a bird for hours strained the arm and shoulder, while fieldwork meant cold, heat, rain, mud, and rough travel. A large hawk or eagle could cause serious injury if handled carelessly.
Birds faced greater dangers. They could strike branches or wires, be injured by quarry, become tangled in equipment, overheat, freeze, fall ill, or simply fly beyond recovery. In earlier periods a lost bird might be traced by bells and patient searching. Modern radio and satellite telemetry can make finding one easier, but does not remove the need for sound training and judgment.
Loss also carried emotional weight. Daily feeding and handling created familiarity between keeper and bird, even though a raptor was not a domesticated animal in the same way as livestock bred for household dependence. The falconer worked through cooperation with a creature that retained its own appetite, attention, and freedom of movement.
Change over time
Falconry's practical importance changed as firearms and other hunting methods spread, landscapes were enclosed or altered, wild raptor populations declined, and household staffs became smaller. In some places the paid estate falconer became less common. The practice continued through families, clubs, professional bird handlers, breeders, wildlife workers, and people who maintained older traditions.
Modern falconers use veterinary medicine, precision scales, purpose-made diets, captive-bred birds, synthetic materials, vehicles, and electronic tracking. Many also work in education, rehabilitation, conservation, or bird control at airports, farms, industrial sites, and public spaces. Laws now regulate the keeping, breeding, transport, and hunting use of raptors in ways that differ by country.
The falconer remains important in daily life history because the occupation reveals the labor behind a celebrated image. Before a trained bird could rise from a glove, someone had cleaned its quarters, prepared meat, checked every strap and feather, walked it into the weather, and spent weeks teaching it that returning was safe and rewarding.
