Daily life in Vanuatu during the Lapita period, c. 1000 BCE

Coastal settlements, food gathering, skilled crafts, and connections between islands in ancient Oceania.

Around 1000 BCE, communities associated with the Lapita archaeological tradition were establishing life on the islands now called Vanuatu. They belonged to a wider movement of settlement that had extended from the Bismarck Archipelago into Remote Oceania. Lapita names a tradition recognized especially through decorated pottery, rather than a single island society with identical customs everywhere. Teouma, on southern Efate, provides an unusually detailed window through its cemetery, pottery, and food remains. This account centres on that evidence while distinguishing it from comparisons with other islands and later deposits. The date is an approximate setting for early settlement, not a claim that every excavated object belongs to one year.[1]

Housing and Living Spaces

Early inhabitants of Teouma occupied a coastal setting different from the landscape visible today. A shallow bay lay beside a coral-rubble beach and an uplifted reef terrace, with a stream providing access to fresh water. These features placed landing places, water, and several food-gathering environments close together. For a household, choosing such a location reduced the distance between essential activities: returning from the shore, carrying water, and bringing materials into the settlement. This is a practical interpretation of the site's geography, rather than a recovered map of individual households and their daily routes.[2]

The buildings themselves are less securely known. Comparison with the wider Lapita world supports timber frameworks and roofs made from plant materials. Rectangular houses and, at some sites, raised structures are documented in that broader record. They offer possibilities for reconstruction, but do not establish that Teouma consisted of identical stilt houses above the water. Surviving evidence cannot supply a standard room count, roof pitch, or household size. The Lapita settlement at Nenumbo in the Reef Islands provides a useful comparison for domestic space, while belonging to a different island setting.[3]

Living space also extended beyond shelter. Preparing food, working stone, handling clay, and sorting shellfish required surfaces on which materials could be laid out. It is reasonable to envisage work moving between covered areas and open ground according to the task and weather, although the arrangement of those spaces cannot be drawn precisely. A roof would protect sleepers and possessions from rain; keeping fuel and plant materials usable would require attention to moisture. These ordinary constraints help explain the value of shelter without turning plausible storage racks, partitions, or sleeping mats into excavated facts.

The cemetery gives firmer evidence of how space was organized. Research identifies a contemporary Lapita midden east of the burial area, respecting its boundaries; later deposits extended over parts of the cemetery. A midden is accumulated discarded material, including food debris and broken objects. Its changing relationship to the graves shows that the site's uses shifted over time. The excavated layers therefore preserve successive decisions about dwelling, disposal, and remembrance, rather than the complete plan of a village frozen at its foundation.[2]

Food and Daily Meals

Food came from several environments. Analysis of human bone from Teouma indicates protein from marine and terrestrial sources, while excavated animal remains make this diversity tangible. Reef fish, shellfish, turtles, fruit bats, pigs, and chickens contributed to the range of available foods. Pigs and chickens were domestic animals brought into the islands by people. Their isotope values are compatible with animals feeding relatively freely, including on scraps or small organisms, rather than depending entirely on deliberately supplied plant fodder. The evidence supports a mixed food economy without revealing how frequently a particular household ate pork or served fish.[4]

Fishing was not confined to the sea. Researchers identified freshwater sleeper fish among Teouma's fish bones, alongside numerous coastal and reef-associated species. Rivers and associated habitats therefore belonged within the community's food landscape. Gathering food meant knowing several environments: where fish could be found, how access changed, and which places could be worked safely. The bones establish the catch more directly than the equipment used to obtain it. They do not identify a single fishing method for every species or tell us who made each trip.[5]

Plant foods are harder to reconstruct because they often leave fewer visible remains. At Uripiv, elsewhere in Vanuatu, microscopic plant traces in Lapita deposits identify introduced aroids, the plant family that includes taro. That study concerns deposits around 2700 years before present, later than this article's central date. It demonstrates cultivation within Lapita Vanuatu but cannot serve as a complete list of Teouma crops around 1000 BCE. Gardening should remain part of the wider picture without assuming that familiar modern island staples were all present in the first settlement.[6]

Decorated pottery adds another qualification. A small study of residues in Teouma vessels found similar lipid signatures in decorated examples, inconsistent with marine foods as their contents. The authors suggest selective or special use, despite the importance of seafood in the diet. These pots should not automatically be described as everyday fish-cooking vessels. Meal times, recipes, serving portions, and the frequency of communal meals remain unknown; the strongest reconstruction concerns ingredients and food handling rather than a fixed daily menu.[7]

Work and Labor

Securing food combined several kinds of effort. Fishing and collecting shellfish required knowledge of local waters, while gathering terrestrial foods took people into different surroundings. A diverse catch implies familiarity with more than one habitat and probably a range of techniques. Bringing food back was only one stage: catches had to be sorted, opened or cut, and prepared for eating. These are practical consequences of the recovered food remains. They do not establish a timetable, a standard division of tasks, or a fixed number of hours spent obtaining a meal.[5]

Pottery making demanded another sequence of skills. Clay had to be obtained, prepared, shaped, dried, and fired, with each stage affecting whether a vessel survived. Lapita's characteristic dentate decoration was made by pressing toothed implements into the surface. Repeated impressions created ordered designs, requiring control of spacing and pressure while the clay remained workable. Making a decorated vessel therefore involved both technical judgement and learned visual conventions. Studies of the impressions investigate the tools behind those patterns; they do not establish that every potter used one identical implement or worked in a separate workshop.[8]

Shell working similarly transformed familiar coastal material through selection and repeated effort. Cutting, grinding, and perforating shell could produce ornaments or implements, with the shell's structure limiting what a craftsperson could make. A finished object conceals the time spent choosing material and removing unwanted portions. Such work could be learned through demonstration and practice, although archaeological finds do not identify the age at which learning began. The wider Lapita shell record also varies between sites, so a regional craft tradition should not be mistaken for a complete inventory of one Vanuatu household.[9]

Transport connected this work across islands. Obsidian found at Makué on Aore includes material brought from New Britain, showing that useful stone travelled substantial distances. Moving it required boats and the human effort of arranging and completing voyages. The imported pieces reveal connections, but do not by themselves distinguish founding supplies from later deliveries, gifts from exchanges, or direct journeys from movements through intermediate communities.[10]

Social Structure

Teouma's inhabitants lived through relationships that archaeology reveals only in part. The cemetery demonstrates shared practices, while differences between burials show that people were not all treated identically. Neither observation produces a complete social hierarchy. There are no surviving local written accounts naming household heads, defining property rights, or describing marriage rules. It is therefore more secure to discuss the relationships implied by repeated activities than to assign the community a detailed system of ranks. Household membership and obligations must have shaped cooperation, but their precise forms remain difficult to recover.[11]

Care of the dead required actions extending beyond an initial burial. Study of adult burials identified the later removal of skulls and other bones, followed in some cases by secondary deposition. These practices imply that living people remembered burial places and returned to them. They also involved shared knowledge about how remains should be handled. Differences in treatment may have reflected social position or individual circumstances, but cannot simply be translated into a list of occupations or inherited classes. The cemetery offers evidence for continuing relationships with the deceased, while leaving the associated stories and beliefs largely inaccessible.[11]

Movement between places also entered community life. A study of tooth enamel from seventeen Teouma individuals identified four probable immigrants through distinctive isotope values. Enamel retains evidence connected with childhood diet and environment, making it possible to distinguish some people with different early histories. This suggests that the burial community included people whose lives had begun elsewhere. The results cannot name their home islands with certainty, identify their languages, or explain whether they arrived with relatives, through marriage, or for other reasons.[12]

Food distribution may have expressed social differences too. Male and female adults in one dietary study differed in nitrogen isotope values, potentially reflecting access to different foods or patterns of activity. The result does not establish that all men fished or that all women gardened. It is evidence for variation requiring explanation, rather than a ready-made division of labor.[4]

Tools and Technology

Sharp edges and durable working surfaces came from stone and shell. Teouma's lithic assemblage includes obsidian whose chemical composition links it to sources in New Britain and the Banks Islands. Some stone therefore crossed long sea distances before reaching the people who used it. The small size of many pieces, together with limited evidence for primary reduction at the site, suggests that at least some material arrived already flaked. The stone's source can be identified more confidently than the exact route or sequence of owners through which it travelled.[13]

Obsidian fractures into extremely sharp edges, suitable for cutting, but a sharp flake does not reveal every material on which it was used. Teouma also yielded worked chert, quartz, and basalt. Cores and pieces retaining their original outer surfaces suggest that these materials were obtained locally and flaked at the site. Tool supply therefore combined imported stone with resources nearer home. The contrast matters for everyday work: access to cutting material did not depend entirely on the arrival of a boat carrying obsidian from another island.[13]

Boats joined these materials and skills into a transport system. Imported obsidian demonstrates the result of successful crossings, while the boats themselves are not preserved at the excavated settlements discussed here. Hull dimensions and sail arrangements cannot be reconstructed from cargo alone. Whatever their precise design, seaworthy craft made supplies, journeys, and relationships between islands possible, connecting local work to a much larger maritime setting.[10]

Clothing and Materials

Clothing is among the least visible parts of Lapita daily life in Vanuatu. No complete wardrobe from Teouma establishes ordinary garment shapes, colours, or differences between work and ceremonial dress. Plant materials decay much more readily than pottery, stone, or shell. Their absence limits reconstruction of appearance, and makes it especially important to distinguish surviving objects from comparisons with other Pacific traditions.

Historical linguistics supplies one such comparison. Reconstructed Oceanic vocabulary includes terms for barkcloth garments, barkcloth working, and plaiting. It supports a tradition of making flexible materials that could clothe bodies and furnish domestic spaces. Barkcloth is produced from processed inner bark, rather than woven from spun threads. This wider linguistic evidence makes its use plausible in Lapita Vanuatu, but does not identify the garment worn by a particular Teouma resident or prove that later island styles already existed.[3]

Shell ornaments provide a more durable view of personal presentation across the Lapita world. Beads, rings, and pendants required deliberate shaping and finishing; even a small object could embody considerable skill. Cords or other attachments would be necessary for many ways of wearing them, but usually survive less well. An ornament's shape does not by itself identify the wearer's gender, age, or standing. The regional evidence documents possibilities for adornment, not a uniform costume shared by every island. Personal appearance thus depended partly on objects we can examine and partly on soft materials, arrangements, and meanings that remain beyond direct recovery.[9]

Daily life in Lapita Vanuatu around 1000 BCE brought together coastal settlement, varied food gathering, skilled manufacture, and journeys across the sea. Teouma makes some of these activities unusually visible, particularly eating, pottery use, and care of the dead. Houses and clothing require more cautious reconstruction. Taken together, the evidence shows ordinary life being established through local environmental knowledge and connections with people and materials beyond a single island.
