Daily life in Nagasaki shipyards during the Meiji period

A grounded look at routines around Nagasaki Harbour, where inherited craft skills, imported machinery, wage labor, and household thrift sustained a rapidly expanding shipbuilding industry.

Nagasaki entered the Meiji period with an unusual industrial inheritance. Its government ironworks had begun under the Tokugawa shogunate with Dutch assistance, and the new government assumed control in 1868. During the following decades the works passed from state management to Mitsubishi, which leased it in 1884, purchased it in 1887, and renamed it Mitsubishi Shipyard in 1893. Dry docks, machine shops, foundries, pattern work, and building berths spread around the deep harbor at Akunoura and Tategami. The company records the completion of No. 1 Dry Dock in 1879, No. 2 in 1896, No. 3 in 1905, and eight building berths by 1906.[1]

These milestones were experienced through ordinary routines rather than as a simple story of machines replacing handcraft. Shipwrights, riveters, molders, machinists, apprentices, porters, boatmen, clerks, and foremen worked beside a harbor still crowded with fishing craft, ferries, coal boats, and merchant shipping. Families measured industrial growth through rent, food prices, soot, shift times, injury, and the reliability of a wage. Nagasaki's shipyards joined Western marine engineering to Japanese craft organization, creating a working landscape in which technical change depended on trained hands and close household cooperation.[3]

Housing and Living Spaces

Most shipyard households needed to remain within practical reach of the waterfront. Workers rented rooms or modest wooden houses around Akunoura, Inasa, Tategami, and other settlements facing the harbor, while some walked in from older neighborhoods or nearby villages. Nagasaki's narrow shoreline and steep surrounding slopes limited level building land. Houses, workshops, shops, wells, and lanes therefore stood close together, and routes to work could involve waterside roads, hillside paths, ferries, or small boats. A laborer's dwelling might consist of one or two tatami rooms with a small earth-floored cooking area. Bedding was folded away each morning, and chests, shelves, baskets, and wall pegs made the same limited space serve for meals, sleep, mending, child care, and storage.

Living conditions varied with employment and rank. An established foreman, clerk, or highly valued mechanic could maintain a larger rented house, while apprentices, recent migrants, and casual hands might lodge with relatives, a work-group leader, or a boarding-house keeper. Shared wells and privies reduced privacy, and water carrying, sweeping, ash disposal, and laundry added hours of domestic labor. The harbor brought damp air and salt; the yards added coal smoke, metal dust, paint, oil, and persistent hammering. Families aired futon and clothing when the weather cleared, wiped soot from surfaces, stored grain against moisture and pests, and watched cooking fires and lamps carefully in densely built wooden districts.

Home and workplace were connected by people as much as by distance. A household might take in a boarder, prepare meals for an unmarried worker, mend work clothes for cash, or keep a small shop serving men on their way to the yard. Wives and older children timed cooking and errands around the worker's departure and return, but industrial schedules did not remove older neighborhood relationships. Bathhouses, shrines, temples, markets, wells, and mutual help during illness or a funeral remained central. The annexation of the Fuchi area into Nagasaki in 1898 formalized the city's expansion toward the industrial shoreline, where the shipyard and related metal trades were already reshaping settlement.[6]

Food and Daily Meals

Shipyard meals had to be filling, portable, and affordable. Rice was preferred, but lower-paid households commonly mixed it with barley or other grains to stretch supplies. Miso soup, pickled daikon and greens, tofu, beans, seaweed, and small fish provided familiar accompaniments. Nagasaki's harbor and regional trading links made fresh and dried seafood readily visible, though price and season determined how often a working family bought it. Sweet potatoes, an established crop in Kyushu, offered inexpensive bulk, while vegetables arrived from nearby farming districts. A better-paid household could add more fish, eggs, sake, or occasional meat; an interruption in wages quickly reduced variety.

A worker leaving early might carry rice balls or a wooden lunch box containing grain, pickles, and a little fish. Food was wrapped in cloth, and tea or water travelled in a flask or bottle where practical. Men living in lodgings could buy noodles, rice, tea, and simple cooked dishes from stalls or small eating houses near the waterfront. The yard's whistle and the demands of a repair or launching shaped when food was eaten. Overtime meant that someone at home kept rice or soup for a late return, while a missed day through illness or injury meant less money for the next market visit. Research on Meiji consumption shows meaningful differences between urban and rural staple diets, and shipyard families often bridged the two through relatives who sent rice, vegetables, or preserved foods from the countryside.[5]

Cooking remained labor-intensive even as industrial machinery transformed the harbor. A charcoal or wood fire had to be lit and tended; water was fetched, rice washed, fish cleaned, vegetables cut, and utensils scrubbed by hand. Fuel economy favored soups and simmered dishes that could feed several people from one pot. Women usually carried most of this domestic workload, sometimes while earning money through vending, washing, sewing, keeping lodgers, or other small work. Nagasaki also had a long history of contact with Chinese and European foods, and castella, bread, Chinese-style dishes, and imported provisions were more visible than in many Japanese cities. Visibility did not make them daily fare for every shipyard family. Ordinary meals remained governed by wages, household size, fuel, season, and the bodily demands of heavy work.

Work and Labor

The shipyard employed a wide range of occupations. Wooden and composite vessels still required ship carpenters, sawyers, joiners, caulkers, painters, rope workers, and boatmen. Iron and steel construction brought platers, riveters, boilermakers, molders, pattern makers, blacksmiths, machinists, engine fitters, turners, drillers, and foundry laborers. Draftsmen translated designs into measured drawings; clerks kept wage, material, and contract records; foremen coordinated crews; and general laborers carried coal, timber, castings, plates, tools, and waste. The yard's history illustrates how imported industrial methods were absorbed through existing skills rather than simply copied.[3]

A working day was governed increasingly by clocks, whistles, written rules, and supervisors. Men entered through company gates and reported to shops or berths. Skill remained embodied: apprentices learned to align a fitting, strike a rivet, read a template, or manage hot metal by observing and repeating under experienced hands. Research on Japanese industrial labor describes the continued importance of work-group leaders and inside contracting during early industrialization. Such leaders could recruit, train, discipline, and sometimes pay their own groups, linking personal obligation to the developing factory hierarchy.[4] As management became more centralized, formal job grades and technical education grew, but practical shop-floor knowledge remained essential.

The work exposed bodies to heavy and varied risks. Staging and dock edges created falls; suspended loads could shift; furnaces, steam, and hot rivets caused burns; metal chips and hammering threatened eyes and hearing; and paint, smoke, coal dust, oil, and poor ventilation made air unpleasant. Work beneath a hull or inside a boiler was cramped, while rain and summer heat affected open berths. No modern safety system eliminated these dangers. A worker's household absorbed the consequences of cuts, illness, or lost employment, and relatives might provide food, credit, or care.

Production expanded sharply late in the period. No. 3 Dry Dock opened in 1905, building berths multiplied, and a cantilever crane imported from Scotland began service in 1909. These facilities could handle larger hulls and components, but they also intensified coordination among designers, storekeepers, machine shops, foundries, and berth crews. Technical staff occupied an intermediate position between university-trained engineers and manual workers. Historical research on the Nagasaki dockyard finds that many technicians came from technical schools, or even elementary education, entered lower-ranked posts, and could advance through internal instruction and demonstrated capability.[7] A ship was therefore the product of a layered workforce whose members had different training, security, authority, and pay.

Social Structure

Shipyard society was ordered by ownership, education, occupation, skill, age, gender, and steadiness of employment. Mitsubishi managers and senior engineers controlled investment, contracts, designs, and production schedules. Below them stood office staff, draftsmen, shop supervisors, and foremen. Skilled mechanics and craft masters possessed knowledge that gave them bargaining value and influence over apprentices. At the broad base were helpers, carriers, cleaners, and other laborers whose tasks were physically demanding and easier for employers to replace. Permanent or favored workers had more predictable income than casual and subcontracted hands, so two families living in the same lane could face very different levels of security.

Recruitment often followed personal connections. A newcomer might obtain an introduction from a relative, a fellow villager, a lodging-house keeper, or an experienced worker already tied to a crew. Reputation for skill, strength, punctuality, and obedience influenced continued employment. Technical schooling opened some paths upward, but education costs and family needs restricted access. Company hierarchies separated salaried staff from shop-floor labor even when both contributed indispensable knowledge. The development of in-house training and promotion created limited mobility for capable technicians, while reinforcing distinctions between ranks.[7]

Women's labor was less visible in formal shipyard records but fundamental to the industrial household. Wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters prepared food, carried water, washed soot-stained clothing, nursed injuries, managed credit, and raised children around long workdays. Some earned cash by sewing, laundry, vending, shop work, domestic service, or taking in lodgers. Children ran errands and cared for younger siblings; whether they remained in school depended partly on household income and the opportunities available nearby. Industrial wages therefore rested on a large amount of unpaid and supplementary work outside the gate.

Neighborhood life softened some divisions without erasing them. Workers and their families met at markets, bathhouses, wells, festivals, funerals, and religious observances. Savings groups, shop credit, hometown ties, and informal loans helped households manage uneven income. Nagasaki's international port also placed Japanese laborers near foreign merchants, engineers, sailors, and technical equipment, but contact did not imply equal status. Western-style offices, ships, and machinery stood beside wooden homes and established local customs. The shipyard community was neither a single unified class nor a fully company-controlled world; it was a layered urban society held together by employment, kinship, neighborhood exchange, and shared dependence on the harbor.

Tools and Technology

Meiji shipbuilding combined familiar hand tools with large fixed machinery. Carpenters used saws, adzes, planes, chisels, augers, mallets, measuring lines, and caulking irons. Metal trades relied on forges, anvils, tongs, files, drills, punches, hammers, rivet sets, gauges, lathes, planers, and casting molds. Pattern makers shaped precise wooden models from which foundry molds were made, connecting the drawing office to iron production. Steam engines powered pumps and machine tools, while cranes, chains, blocks, winches, and rails moved materials that workers could not lift safely by hand.

Docks changed the scale and sequence of work. A dry dock allowed a vessel to be floated in, settled on blocks as water was pumped out, inspected below the waterline, repaired, painted, and returned to the harbor. Kosuge Slip Dock, built with British expertise and imported machinery near the beginning of the Meiji period, hauled smaller vessels from the water on a slip. The later No. 3 Dry Dock, Former Pattern Shop, and Giant Cantilever Crane survive as evidence of Nagasaki's progression from imported Western equipment toward full industrial ship production.[2]

Technology also organized time and information. Clocks, whistles, ledgers, job tickets, templates, blueprints, telegraph messages, and printed rules coordinated people across the yard. Yet precision machinery did not remove physical effort. Workers still pushed trucks, steadied loads, climbed staging, held plates, swung hammers, and cleaned shops. The contrast continued at home, where buckets, charcoal braziers, wash tubs, needles, brooms, baskets, ceramic jars, and oil lamps structured daily labor. Modern engineering and hand work existed side by side on both sides of the company gate.

Clothing and Materials

Shipyard clothing was selected for movement, durability, and repeated repair. Shop-floor workers commonly wore cotton jackets and trousers, leggings, sashes, headcloths, and tabi with practical footwear. Loose sleeves and hems could catch around machinery, while sparks, sharp edges, grease, paint, coal dust, and salt water damaged cloth. Aprons, gaiters, and gloves offered limited protection. Modern protective clothing and standardized safety equipment were not yet routine.

Dress also made workplace rank visible. Managers, engineers, and clerks were more likely to appear in clean kimono and hakama or in Western-style suits and leather shoes. Draftsmen and supervisors needed clothing suitable for offices and shop visits. Manual workers kept cleaner garments for festivals, funerals, and family occasions, but a Western wardrobe remained beyond many budgets. Imported styles were noticeable without displacing Japanese dress.

At home, clothing generated another cycle of work. Cotton garments were washed, patched, re-stitched, and sometimes re-dyed. Worn adult clothes could be cut down for children; pieces beyond repair became rags, padding, ties, or tool wraps. Rain capes, straw hats, layered jackets, and dry tabi mattered in wet weather, while summer favored lighter cloth. Bedding and work clothes competed for drying space in crowded lanes. Careful mending helped a limited wardrobe serve at the yard, in the neighborhood, and on formal occasions.

Daily life in Nagasaki shipyards during the Meiji period joined large industrial change to repeated household tasks. Dry docks, machine tools, formal drawings, and imported cranes enlarged what the harbor could build, but ships still depended on craft judgment, strenuous manual labor, apprenticeship, and coordination. Beyond the gates, cooking, washing, mending, credit, child care, and neighborhood help converted uncertain earnings into everyday survival. Nagasaki's industrial transformation was therefore lived through both the machinery on its waterfront and the practical routines of the families around it.
